For some people exposed to trauma, the pain does not subside over time and they are left with a range of symptoms that can significantly reduce quality of life including the inability to sleep and connect with others. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may be experienced by anyone who has witnessed or experienced trauma including but not limited to physical, sexual or domestic violence, accident scenes, natural disasters and war zones.
At Acupuncture Emporium & Natural Therapy Centre, we treat each and every patient with compassion and empathy. Our Clinical Director, Nicola Macdonald, has trained with Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB), a volunteer network to provide care at the sites of natural disasters and humanitarian crises. Acupuncture is now also being used in the United States of America to help returned service men and women to manage PTSD, often referred to as Battlefield Acupuncture.
A systematic review of acupuncture for PTSD concluded that although the studies are small and the evidence quality is low, there are “potential benefits of acupuncture for PTSD and depression symptoms compared with control groups in the months following treatment.”
